Starting a blog can have you second-guessing yourself. Questions like Can I do this, how will I do this? And much more will have you delaying yourself, I know this from personal experience. I actually started thinking about starting a blog back in 2014 and I just started blogging in late 2017.
How I wish I would have started when I had first thought about it but let’s not ponder on the past, let’s focus on the now. You probably want to start a blog but have so many questions and well I’m your gal. I’m going to break down how easy starting your own blog can be and I will equip you with the essentials so that you can get started asap! You ready?
WHY & WHAT
First before we get to the technical stuff you need to have 2 very important things figured out. The first you need is to know your why. You have probably heard this before and it is very true. I have personally started things before and I’d hear “you need to have your why figured out” I would just brush it off and surely it would all crumble before my eyes.
I want you to be as successful as possible so make sure to know what the real motive to you starting your blog is. Many of you might do it because it’s a passion and others because you know you can make an income from blogging. Whatever the case is make sure it’s something that will keep you motivated throughout because although blogging is fun there are a lot of things to do before a post goes live.
The second important thing is knowing what you will be talking about on your blog. Having a niche is important so whether that be technology, beauty, or a mom blog all of these are great. Now maybe you have multiple topics you would like to talk about maybe a lifestyle blog would work for you. You can also have topics that work together and have your blog have a flow that keeps all your content inner-twined somehow.
Blog Post Ideas
Now that you have a foundation for your blog now comes mapping out some blog post ideas. You can go on Pinterest and find trending topics for your niche, another great way to find ideas is through Youtube. If those don’t help then try thinking about what problem you are trying to solve for your readers.
*A tip I highly recommend is, as a blogger topic ideas will sometimes randomly come to mind, almost anywhere. Make sure to always have somewhere to write these down I personally use the notepad on my phone or just use the voice record method.
Think of what you want your website domain name to be. Now, this might take awhile and you may need to do some googling to find the right one for you. Try to make your domain a .com it’s more professional than .net or .co.
- Make sure its a name that hasn’t already been used or is currently being used.
- Pick a name that represents your brand.
Set up your blog
The next big step is setting up your blog, now if you are serious about blogging and if you are looking to monetize your content having a self-hosted blog is a must-have. Free platforms like Bloggers or WordPress .com own the content you create on their websites. These and other free platforms most of the time will not let you monetize your site, instead, they place their own ads on your blog posts and that really sucks if you are the one putting the hard work into it.
This is the reason I chose to self-host that way I own my content and don’t have any limitations when it comes to what and how I want my blog to look.
Although self-hosting is not free there are so many great companies that only charge as little as $3.95 a month! Yeah I know right, I was shocked at first too. My favorite hosting company is Siteground I had read so many great reviews online. Siteground has
- amazing low-cost prices, ($3.95 a month)
- One-click WordPress setup
- their customer support team is literally amazing, I’ve asked them so many questions and they are always ready to answer me plus they have amazing hosting plans to get you started with whatever you may need for your site.
- Free site transfers
Once you are all signed up with Siteground you can set up your WordPress. You can easily install it onto your host with one-click. If you are having trouble just ask the support team to help you out. It is literally that simple to get your blog started.

What you will want to do next is pick a theme for your blog. When I started I made sure to ask other bloggers and read up on some good themes. The reason this is important is because not all themes are made the same. Some come with different perks, colors.
You want something that will let your readers navigate easily and a theme that will let you take control of the color scheme you want.
Maybe you had never heard of plugins before, well they are a big part of your blog. Plugins will let you add widgets to your blog, control your SEO and so much more.
Please don’t feel overwhelmed by all this information, in a week you will be navigating through your blog like a true boss!
*A tip for newbie bloggers, set up an email opt-in, I wish I would have started mine my first week. This will help you create your own tribe or group of people that will continuously come to your blog.
